Worship

Worship has been the focal point of our church life and thus, we take this time to be together seriously. It is a pivotal time set aside for our growing closer to both God and to one another. In a city which never sleeps and in which our church family often finds little time to stop and celebrate God's good Creation, the time set apart on Sunday mornings for our Service of Worship is good news for the weary.

In a culture where "style" of worship often takes precedence in people's minds over substance, we seek to build our services around substance first and then incorporate the various "styles" which will best convey the theme of a particular service. Our Worship Committee takes into consideration that those who choose to worship with us come from multiple "traditions". Some are rooted in the traditions of the southern revivalist style, others from highly liturgical traditions, some from African or African-American traditions, and yet others from what would be called main-line Protestantism. Thus, the service seeks to embrace all of these styles which touch the hearts and souls of those gathered for the purpose of drawing closer to God-a style which is often called "blended worship".

The proclamation of the Word of God takes many forms in worship and is not limited to preaching. However, preaching does play an important role in our services. Our pastor, David Waugh, shares the preaching role with our associate, Tiffany Triplett, as well as other members of the congregation. We also take the opportunity to introduce our worshippers to the larger family of faith by inviting pulpit guests from those organizations with which we are affiliated in mission and ministry.

We believe that opportunity should be given to incorporate all of one's senses into the worshipper's full participation in the service. As in most churches, music is vital. Hymns seek to represent the full range of our various traditions. The music provided by our wonderful church choir is often the high point of a service. We are frequently blessed by the participation of talented soloists and instrumentalists who offer their gifts in the leadership of services. On occasion liturgical dance plays a central role in the interpretation of the music or scripture for a service. And thought is given to the "visual" setting of our worship space so that the theme for a service is "seen" as well as heard.

Metro is blessed to have as our worship area a space constructed almost one hundred years ago as the home of a Polish Catholic congregation. Although it has gone through many changes since that congregation sold the facility, the beautiful stained glass windows and ceiling murals remain. In the past year we have installed a beautiful hardwood floor and new chairs in order to provide a versatile and welcoming setting for persons to gather as family for the worship of God.
